GIA Certified Diamonds

GIA Certified Diamonds are diamonds that got their certification from the Gemological Institute of America, and are considered the highest certified diamonds in the market.

The Diamonds industry qualifies and values diamonds according to the four C’s (carats, color, clarity and cut.) However have you ever wondered who sets the standard for the way diamonds are graded? It is not your jeweler. It is also not the diamond appraiser down the street. Or your insurance adjuster. If you took one diamond to any of these individuals they would each grade it in a different way. There is only one true and accurate way to grade a diamond and that is through the GIA - the Gemological Institute of America.

The GIA certificate is known to all diamond experts and sellers and you should never deal with a seller that has never heard of it. It is recognized throughout the diamond industry as providing the most accurate opinion when it comes to valuing and grading diamonds.

Knowing about GIA certification can also give you an idea how much a diamond should be worth. All you have to do is call a jeweler and describe the diamond and ask what would be the price for such a GIA certified diamond. For instance you might want to know how much a .75 carat, G color VS1 clarity diamond with a princess cut might be worth. They should be able to give the exact price. You can then shop around at all of the jewelers and find out which one is offering the least mark up selling that particular diamond. In fact knowing the GIA certification board’s value of a diamond allows you to shop around for one only using the Internet or telephone. You don’t even have to visit a jewelry shop. Of course you do want to always purchase a diamond that has a good reputation and gives money back guarantees.

A GIA certified diamond is not hard to find. Almost all jewelers sell them. The best diamond dealers sell nothing but these kinds of GIA certified gems. The thing to watch out for when you are buying diamonds is the diamond sellers that tell you that their grading system is the same as the GIA certification process. This may be true but if you need to resell that diamond at the same price you will need that GIA certificate. You might also be told that GIA certification ups the price of the diamonds but in truth the cost of sending the diamond for the certification is only about a hundred dollars. So the mark up is not much.

Beware of buying a diamond from a seller who has graduated from a GIA grading course. This is not the same as actual CIA grading. The GIA certificates always have New York and Carlsbad addresses at the top of the corticated. The only drawback to shopping for a GIA certified gems is that sometimes they are not available in the exact size or color that you want. However you can usually order them or send away the diamond that you have chosen for certification.
